VISUAL PERCEPTION

1-Visual perception and Beauty

For centuries, the essence of Beauty is the most intriguing mysteries for philosophers, artists, art historians and scientists. There is a link between aesthetics, perception and brain function.

To produce our identity Three important ingredients

1-our point of view-how and what we see

2-others point of view-how they see us

3- memory

((((Harmony is not the absence of contrasts but it is the balance between contrasts. Embracing opposites at the same time and to give them more meaning and power.  Just like Love and Hate, peace and war, still and active, less and more. Symmetry, proportions and contrast makes it beautiful in ones’ perception.  In History Beauty was perceived as wholeness, all parts being in harmony with each and other, and what was light and bright.

Mirrors were used to reflect light either penetrating or reflecting.

Beauty was singled and centered unlike Ugliness that was always represented in crowded and overwhelming compositions.

Shadows used to emphasize the light and bring out the beauty. Like Dante, Bosch and Bruegel.

cangiante is one of the canonical painting modes of the Renaissance; i.e. one of the four modes of painting colours available to Italian High Renaissance painters, along with sfumato, chiaroscuro and unione. All these modes work on color and light to bring out the beauty of their subjects. As with chiaroscuro, unione conveys the contrasts, and as sfumato it strives for harmony and unity, but also for coloristic richness.

Women always painted as flawless, pure, desired and unavailable. Like Cervantes’ Dulcinea in Don Qiujote.Golden ratio is used to create and define beauty.

Troubadours in history sing poetic songs, Poets and Novelist write, artists draw and they all help us visualize influencing our perceptions.)))

2-Visual perception and Success

There are many books on how to gain Success by improving your visual perception. Main idea is to learn on what to focus and what to ignore. First you have to learn to able to see the whole picture and then train the mind to focus on only the details that are relevant to you and your progress. To see only what you need and not to overload your brain with junk details.

3-Visual perception and Emotions

Emotions affect how and what we see. If you are happy you see the glass half full-and if you are unhappy you see it half empty. Emotional flooding happens when you are overwhelmed by your feeling that it triggers a Physiological fight or flight response. Your feelings are experiences of emotions .Feelings provide insight. Six basic emotions are happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger and surprise. All affected by your visual preception. Empathy and EQ improved by visual perception.

4-Visual Perception and Health-Well Being

Visual perception affects your emotions and emotions affect your health. They are intertwined. Take an example of Anorexia nervosa-an eating disorder characterized by distorted perception of weight. Psychology has a deep impact on illnesses and numerous studies show that psychological factors affect the development and progression of diseases. Psychology are emotions and emotions are positive or negative depending on your visual perception.

5-Visual perception and Learning

Brain Based Learning, (1997) author Eric Jensen, states that up to 87% of students do NOT learn from hearing alone. He goes on to state that we under-utilize our visual perception system when learning. Use of colored handouts, charts, graphs, photographs, posters, and graphic organizers such as those incorporated into Bonnie Terry Learning products will increase student’s learning through boosting and strengthening use of the visual system. Using visual and kinesthetic methods increase student performance and decrease discipline problems.

6-Visual perception and Dreams

There is good reason to believe that dreams are a form of perceptual or mental simulation process. ALL perceptions whether waking or dreaming are the result of predictive simulations conducted by the brain in order to anticipate world events/opportunities.

(((((Exposition-opening-dream reactivates the unconscious and pictures it metaphorically

Development-plot emerges- dream introduces an Alternative view or Solution

Culmination-dream self responds-dream resolution or acceptance of a new viewpoint

Lysis-result of dreams actions dream emotionally reinforces the outcome.))))

Three types of dreams

1-Wishful thinking dream- deal with events or thoughts of the day that your mind is accepting

2-precognitive dreams-events that your moind predicts will happen. Your mind is constantly accumulating information base on what you see and hear.

3- venting dreams-represent events, traumas, doubts, fears that u are removing from your past or present. You no longer need to hold on to.

How and what you perceive during the day, you see in dreams.
